Technology Talk: How To Stop Modernizing Federal IT

In the looming shadows of the White House’s Federal Data Strategy (and specifically the targeted pressures of the 2021 Action Plan), IT organizations within agencies are now being tasked to transition to operational conventions founded on the concepts of deploying consistent data infrastructures.  However, current systems of record are often decades-old, each with its own supporting personnel, technologies, and data stewardship logic.  Further, many agencies have already spent significant dollars on “big-bang” modernization efforts with the aim to facilitate a consistent data underpinnings…often with very little to show for it.  In this talk, Mr. Graham will explore an alternative to modernization that will accelerate the transition of Federal IT systems toward proactive evidence-based decisions based on consistent data infrastructures.

Building community through citizen-first digital transformation

Today, government agencies of all types are focused on investing in the community to improve overall civic life. Modernizing government IT offerings, and ensuring those efforts put the citizen in the center, are the keys to doing it effectively.

In this session, we’ll discuss how the savviest government agencies are:

Moving quickly to deliver more: Building out data centers, and other traditional approaches, are too lengthy for today’s needs. To become truly citizen-centric, agencies at all levels need to respond quickly, drive engagement and feedback, and demonstrate responsiveness. We’ll explain how a cloud approach enables agencies to deliver more, sooner.

Seeking to build community: Boosting capability and responsiveness isn’t helpful if citizens aren’t aware of what’s available. We’ll discuss how agency advocates who are excited about advancements can effectively engage with the community, explain the latest investments in digital, and help citizens understand how those investments can benefit them.

Futureproofing IT Modernization in Federal with a Logical Data Platform

The current pandemic has forced a new normal across industries and government –
decreased budget and fewer staff. Federal agencies have also been affected in a
similar way, but how can they modernize their IT while keeping the lights on? The
answer may lie in a “logical approach” to IT modernization that can be executed with
lower budget and fewer staff.
Many CxOs in Federal are migration to the cloud as part of the IT modernization
strategy. But getting on the cloud is not that easy – it can take time and cause
disruption. CxOs need a logical data management layer/platform that can futureproof
such technology changes from the consumers and enable them to function during the
transition.
Join us for presentation about how to establish such a logical data management layer.
The presenter will discuss the pandemic challenges facing federal agencies, what do
they need to do now to adapt to the new normal, and how can they use the logical data
management platform to guide their transition.

Federal IT Modernization & Competing Mandates

IT is becoming increasingly complex. The pandemic and the shift to telework has eroded the enterprise perimeter and, today’s workforce demands a user experience similar to their personal experience with technology. Meanwhile, the threat landscape continues to pose greater risks from phishing, software supply chain vulnerabilities, and nation state attacks.  To address the increasing risks, new mandates and executive orders and complicating the already confusing reporting of risks and control compliance.  How do agencies operate securely and effectively in today’s environment of competing requirements?

Secure Collaboration in Microsoft 365 with a Zero Trust Lens

Microsoft 365 is designed to quickly bring together collaborators from both across your agency and your external partners. That built in collaboration, however, creates new concerns tracking who has access across your environment and the data with which they are interacting within a Zero Trust architecture mode.

When viewed individually, core pillars of Zero Trust, such as network, data, and user, are very clearly bound in M365: How is our service secured? How do we secure sensitive data? What users are authenticated in our system? However, this approach misses an intersection across Zero Trusts pillars in the collaboration spaces themselves.

Join AvePoint as we discuss how our Federal customers leverage Microsoft 365’s collaborative power using a Zero Trust model. We will discuss:

• Automating policy enforcement at the workspace (Teams, SharePoint, and M365 Groups)

• Workspace compliance, lifecycle, and permissions recertification based on data sensitivity

• Intelligent reporting of exposure risk based on sensitive information types and permissions data

Advances In Observability Facilitate Zero Trust

On this Tech Talk, Cindy Harper, Dynatrace engineer, discusses how observability extends to every device, browser and application supporting every user so agencies can achieve zero trust environments.

How Dynatrace enables:

  • Dynatrace SmartScape maps in real-time all of the components and dependencies in an agency’s ecosystem, including what is expected – hosts, networks and other infrastructure – and unpredictable website, application, services and process activity.
  • Apdex rating system is calculated for each discrete user action and application.
  • OneAgent automatically and continuously tracks all dependencies associated with an individual host.
  • AI platform, Davis, scours for risk vulnerabilities within applications running in the cloud, containers, virtual machines and traditional servers, while analyzing logs, metrics and traces for additional context and faster and entirely accurate root-cause resolution.
  • Integration  with tools like ServiceNow and Ansible enable agencies to rapidly resolve problems through auto-remediation, ensuring that applications are always on and fully optimized.
