The mission of the CQT is to collaborate with industry and government stakeholders to identify compelling needs and challenges in quantum technologies\, and then develop novel solutions to address these opportunities. Quantum technologies are governed by the physics of sub-atomic particles and have relevance to computing\, sensing\, imaging\, metrology\, communications\, and cryptography. Because of their wide-ranging applicability\, quantum technologies promise to be transformative\, with uses in intelligence\, financial security\, computing\, medicine\, and navigation. Society has entered the second quantum revolution\, but it is still in its infancy\, and the nascent quantum industry requires significant fundamental research to mature novel technologies. In partnership with industrial and government members\, the CQT researchers will use their expertise in quantum science and engineering to develop and transfer foundational knowledge into industry-friendly quantum devices\, systems\, and algorithms with enhanced functionality and performance. Additionally\, the CQT will help train the next generation of quantum scientists and engineers to support the development of a critically needed quantum workforce. Students not only conduct research\, but also help writing project reports\, present at biannual meetings\, and interact with industry and government members. This talk will give an overview of the IUCRC model along with the CQT mission\, vision and research themes. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Speaker:\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. David J. SUMMARY:Quantum Speaker Series: Research on Quantum Computing Use Cases in Power Grid
DESCRIPTION:  \n   Presents\nQuantum Speaker Series: \nResearch on Quantum Computing Use Cases in Power Grid\n  \nJuly 14\, 2026 | 1:30-2:00 PM ET \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Webinar starts in:\n \n \n Day(s) \n \n : \n \n \n Hour(s) \n \n : \n \n \n Minute(s) \n \n : \n \n \n Second(s) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n About this Webinar:\n \n \n \n \n \n As new computing capabilities become available\, there is an opportunity to solve some of the unsolved problems in power grids. In this talk\, we will focus on the use cases for quantum computing that have been explored at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) related to simulations and optimization problems in the power grid. For example\, electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation is an upcoming power grid simulation need that needs significant computing resources. Using HHL\, VQLS\, and other variants of solvers\, we have seen feasibility in using quantum computing to perform EMT simulations. Another problem is traditional NP-hard mixed-integer optimization problems like unit commitment and design optimization problems that haven’t been solved to global optima in power systems. Using VQE and QUBO algorithms with benders’ decomposition (or variants)\, we have been able to showcase feasibility and preliminary advantages of using quantum computing to resolve unit commitment and energy storage placement optimization problems. These examples will be discussed\, along with challenges faced in these solutions and the work ahead. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Speaker:\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Suman Debnath\n Group Lead\, Oak Ridge National Laboratory - Pending Agency Approval \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Debnath is the group lead and sub-program and portfolio manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)\, leading several projects with industry\, national labs\, and academia members related to Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Simulations and quantum computing for power grid (creating a portfolio of research projects worth ~US$35+M at ORNL).
